Knitting, New Zealand wool, New Zealand yarn, Wool

It’s not every day that one hears good news in the papers.  This morning’s news had me positively Happy!  Click here to read this article that talks about the opening of the Bruce Woollen Mill (formerly Quality Yarns) in the South Island of New Zealand.

This story is particularly heart-warming for those interested in sustainability because the reason it was bought and reopened is purely to do with the need to produce “Made in New Zealand”.  If this valuable mill had not reopened, many manufacturers would have been forced to go overseas to source yarn, destroying the point of difference for their business, and in turn, destroying the livelihood of staff employed by those businesses.

It’s fantastic also for the future of New Zealand made yarns and that makes me extra happy.  In turn, it’s also the good news for future of New Zealand wool and other natural fibres used in garments and hand-knitting.

I hope you are having a great day – I’m off to work now.

Today, dear readers, I introduce Strong Heart.

Originally conceptualised many months ago, after I’d been reading quite a few blog posts about life’s challenges, I thought it would be nice to knit something as a reminder of the nicer things in life, and as my gift to my knitting sisters, who find life a struggle on occasion.

These gloves are dedicated to my dear friend, Kb, who is going through some tremendous changes in her life right now.

It feels nice to finally have wrapped around my arms what I’ve had in my head for so long.  The cabled motif is a continuous string of hearts.  As I knitted them, I reflected on how much you could read into the hearts – a love of knitting; a love for the person you might be knitting the gloves for; a love for all things cabled – the list goes on!  In this case, the hearts represent “heart”.  The ability to take strength; to take heart, and go on, to take on the good and the bad, opportunity and disappointment, and continue to enjoy all that life has to offer.  Hence the name “Strong Heart”.

But wait, there’s more! This is the mitten version.

I’ve used the wonderful Stansborough Mythral yarn, (DK weight, 100% New Zealand Stansborough Grey wool), in the Rata colourway for the long, fingerless version.  The mittens are in Kokako Grey – the natural colour of the sheep.

The pattern is of course, free and it will be released in about a week.  (I have some major work on at the moment that will prevent me from writing the pattern up too quickly).  Thanks to my son Tim, for the great pics today.

I hope you are having a marvellous, relaxing weekend.  :-)

designing, Knitting

As I finish the second version of my new design, I thought I’d let you know I’m very, very pleased with it.  I hope you like it too when I finally reveal it in its entirety.

The only thing is – I keep seeing variations that I could knit!  I suppose I have to draw the line at some point and just stick to what has decided to come off the needles.

So while you are waiting for the pattern to dry, I thought I’d bore you with the story of how I came to design.

In the 70′s, when I was a child, my parents lived in Malaysia.  Back then, my mother decided it was more practical to have the family’s clothes tailor-made.  Being of British build, we were much larger framed than the tiny locals, and finding clothing that fit was a real issue (even though my mother was skeletally thin, and we were active, slim children with a Chinese dad).

It was fantastic for me – I’d sketch the designs of what I wanted to wear, and my mother would take me and my crude drawings to the dressmaker, who would then manifest my wishes in beautiful fabrics of cool cotton (and once, a gorgeous forest green silk from a recycled sari we got at a school jumble sale!)

When we moved back to New Zealand, there was a bit of a clash of tastes between by-now highly opinionated teen-aged daughter and mother, and she ended up giving me a small allowance to buy my own clothes, rather than face the trauma of going to town with me.  The only thing is… the allowance didn’t quite cover what it cost to buy clothing.  Many of you will remember that back then, it was actually cheaper to make your own clothes than buy them.  So I took to sewing and knitting for myself and my younger siblings too.  I even made my mother a couple of things – she still wears one of the tops, 20 years later!

I decided then that I wanted to be a designer when I “grew up”, and was even offered a job as a seamstress with a local design house after I left school.  For many reasons that I won’t go into here (although lack of mentoring, encouragement and confidence to pursue design would have had a large part to play in this) I ended up going on to study in the business field, living in Hong Kong, working in a corporate environment, raising three children, and that was the end of my creating.  Or so I thought.

Fast forward nearly 20 years, and I found myself back in New Zealand where, thanks to my sister, I rediscovered a passion for knitting!

I suppose it was inevitable that the “picky” in me would start to want to do my own thing with knitting like I did with clothing all those years ago.

It is fortunate that I have a ‘real’ job to rely on to pay the bills, but it’s nice to have come full circle in a way.  I sometimes wonder what life would be like for me now had I stuck to my guns and gone on to design school.  Ah well, we cannot regret what has happened in our lives, but at least I can still design, after a fashion.

Knitting, possum yarn, winter

I’ve realised that if I want to get anywhere with my knitting now that I’m working too, I’m going to have to spend less time on line and more time with my knitting.

This weekend was a perfect opportunity to do just that – rainy, cold, (very cold) and quite miserable, we spent Saturday huddled around the fire trying to stay warm.

Fortunately, it stopped raining today, but it’s still “dragon breath” territory in the kitchen!  I’ve drawn the line at wearing hat and gloves indoors, but the thought has been tempting.  Thank goodness for the warmth of wool, possum, alpaca and mohair!

The cables and lace hoodie is coming along nicely.  I’ve finished the back and one front, but there’s still a tonne of knitting to go – two sleeves, the hood and one more front!  It doesn’t look like much at the moment, but I’m hoping that when worn, you’ll see the detail a bit more.

This weekend I also spent some time finishing a new design:

I  have another version to go before I release the pattern, and you’ll see more of it soon.

Hope you are having a great weekend wherever you are.
